One Day... 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Every musician starts somewhere.  One Day... by New York Puzzle Company is a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle drawn from Jean-Jacques Sempé's quietly unforgettable New Yorker cover from February 5, 1996. A small boy in a red jacket stands in the middle of a music shop, dwarfed by the instruments that surround him, gazing out through the window at a vivid New York City night. The ellipsis in the title does all the work — one day, all of this will make sense. 

Sempé frames the scene from inside the shop, looking out. The foreground is crowded with instruments rendered in warm, luminous detail — a grand piano keyboard in the lower left, sheet music open on a stand, a gleaming golden saxophone upright in the centre, two cellos and a double bass leaning and hovering at the edges, a pair of kettle drums, a harmonica. The boy stands amid all of it, tiny in his red jacket and cap, hands at his sides, looking out through the wide shop window at the city beyond with an expression of pure, quiet longing.

Through the glass, Sempé's beloved New York comes alive in a loose, energetic watercolour — apartment buildings blazing with yellow-lit windows, a yellow cab, pedestrians streaming past, the dense vertical texture of the city at night rendered in every colour. On the right, the reflection of a man in a suit carrying a briefcase ghosts across the window. The deep black above the New Yorker masthead frames the composition with real drama, making the warmth of the shop and the brightness of the city feel all the more luminous. A masterful, deeply moving 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle.
